Montgomery Art Guild art talk event: Copyright Infringement, Plagiarism, and How to Protect Your Artwork
This event was held November 16, 2021, at 6:30 pm. Featured speakers are:
Leanna Leithauser-Lesley, a textile artist and member of the Montgomery Art Guild, who has a wealth of experience using photo references in her work and the steps she’s taken to ensure she does not violate the copyright of the owners of the reference photos, and does not blatantly plagiarize that work.
Julie Grahame, a NYC based editor/publisher of the photo magazine/blog aCurator and a senior representative/licensing for the Yousef Karsh estate (he was a well-known mid-20th century photographer). Ms. Grahame has dealt with instances of internet users infringing on the copyright of artists featured in aCurator and with the Yousef Karsh estate, and the steps she has taken to protect that work. She also has some interesting tips on how artists can protect their work when posting it to social media.
Mark Harris, director of the Dixie Art Colony Foundation, a local central Alabama group dedicated to preserving the artwork of the mid-20th century artists who were part of the Dixie Art Colony in this area. The foundation has had similar issues that the Karsh estate has had, that is, artists using material in the Dixie Art Colony collection as references for their own artwork without permission.
